Statement
Social and Racial Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Statement for School of Rehabilitation Science (developed in consultation feedback received from faculty, staff and students)
Systemic racism and oppression are inherent to Canadian tertiary education institutions, healthcare institutions, and any institutions rooted in colonization and in which significant power differentials exist. Racism (including anti-Indigenous and anti-Black racism), homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia, ableism and other forms of human rights-based inequities and oppression exist within McMaster and the School of Rehabilitation Science program. For example, the School of Rehabilitation Science lacks racial and ethnic diversity among faculty and Indigenous and Black students are significantly underrepresented in programs. The School of Rehabilitation Science has not historically addressed the systemic racism and inequities in healthcare in its curriculum and has not created an inclusive environment for all students, faculty, staff and members of the broader community.
We at the School of Rehabilitation Science, are committed to learning, listening and creating safe and inclusive spaces to engage Indigenous, Black, racialized and equity-deserving students, staff, faculty and members of the community. Our goal is to develop programs that center indigenous sovereignty, racial justice and human rights to create healthcare professionals, leaders, educators and researchers to advance equity, quality and safety for all members of our community. For example, the School of Rehabilitation Science is committed to embedding anti-racism, anti-oppression and the recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in curriculum and training. We are committed to increasing the racial and intersectional diversity of staff, faculty, and students. We are also committed to promoting anti-racist and anti-oppressive behavior and culturally safer and inclusive learning environments and relationships.
We at the School of Rehabilitation Science, recognize that this commitment will be an ongoing effort, requiring learning, unlearning, intentional action and shift in mindset by all members of the community. We commit to monitoring and reporting our progress annually.
ARABAO Committee
Academic Advisory Committee on Anti-Racism, Anti-Bias, and Anti-Oppression (ARABAO) for Students, Faculty and Staff in the School of Rehabilitation Science (SRS)
In 2020, the School of Rehabilitation Science formed an Academic Advisory Committee on Anti-Racism, Anti-Bias, and Anti-Oppression for Students, Faculty and Staff (SRS ARABAO Committee).
Subsequently, each academic program in the SRS formed an ARABAO committee, with a focus on that program’s identified needs and priorities, particularly related to curriculum. Membership included faculty and students, and in some cases alumni and community clinicians.
As of September 2023, the program committees were disbanded, and the discussions and recommendations of each committee have been embedded in the existing educational committees for each program (e.g., curriculum committee, admissions committee, program council).

The SRS ARABAO committee will vision and shape how anti-racism, anti-bias and anti-oppression will be enacted at the SRS by serving as a key consultation point for all major equity, diversity and human rights initiatives that relate to SRS (including but not limited to race, culture, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion/creed, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, health status, body size, linguistic background and the intersections of any of these). The SRS ARABAO committee is co-chaired by a faculty member and a student. Membership includes faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community clinicians.
